Intrigue

During quiet conversation,

the pace of speech quickens

due to an excitement shared

between two persons,

unknown to either the cause.

The tension hangs between

each pause for thoughtful reply,

a distinct respite after a bout of

weighted air that seeks response,

and response in turn.

They do not touch,

but the distance between them

is diminished

in each thought shared,

in every question answered,

in all words that flow

from their mouths,

sounding before them,

a duet of wind instruments.

Intrigue is at the forefront,

guiding the discussion down paths

of exploration, seeking only

to understand.

In these moments,

he wonders what she thinks

of him, and she

wonders how he thinks.
